New community kitchen opens in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS – A community kitchen at the Centre for Seniors Information in Brocklehurst was officially opened today.

Kamoops MLAs Terry Lake and Todd Stone were joined by local MP Cathy McLeod and Coun. Ken Christian, along centre staff and volunteers for the ceremony today, April 8.

“The kitchen will make a great deal of difference. People will be able to come in and learn cooking skills,” Lake says. “We know particularly with our seniors, when you may not have a wide family around you any more… meal preparation is a big challenge.”

The programs at the community kitchen will be directed towards seniors but will be open to all ages.

“We’re really trying to shift resources into home and community so people can stay healthier in their homes longer, so that they don’t tip over the edge and end up in the emergency department or end up in hospital," Lake says.

The community kitchen will offer classes in a variety of food preparation areas, including canning and preserving food and cooking for specialty diets.

The centre's executive director Brenda Prevost says the kitchen relied heavily on volunteers. She awarded plaques to two volunteers for their efforts in building the kitchen and thanked many others.

The Centre for Seniors Information is also home to the recently opened legal clinic run by the Thompson Rivers University law department.
