Obama says his landmark health care law “is here to stay” after Supreme Court victory

WASHINGTON – President Barack Obama says his landmark health care law, which expanded health insurance coverage to millions of Americans, “is here to stay.”

Obama spoke Thursday after the Supreme Court upheld a major component of the reform, widely known as Obamacare, preserving health insurance for millions of people.

Obama says that while there is still work to be done to make health care in the U.S. better, “this law is working.”

The outcome is a major victory for Obama in his most significant domestic achievement. The 2010 law, called the Affordable Care Act, prevents insurers from denying coverage because of “pre-existing” health conditions. It requires almost everyone in the U.S. to be insured and provides financial help to consumers who otherwise would spend too much on their health insurance payments.
