Part of Lamoille Canyon reopens following wildfire

ELKO, Nev. – Local residents and visitors were allowed back into Lamoille Canyon two months after a wildfire swept through the Nevada land.

The Elko Daily Free Press reports the U.S. Forest Service on Saturday allowed the public to access the Powerhouse Picnic Area and Talbot Trailhead at the base of the canyon.

The Lamoille Canyon Scenic Byway will remain temporarily closed about 3 miles (4.83 kilometres) above the junction of Lamoille Highway.

District Ranger Josh Nicholes says canyon officials are working as fast as they can to make the entire area safe again and open to the public.

The canyon was closed for a two-month period due to the 14-square-mile (36.3-square-kilometre) wildfire, which started Sept. 30 near the Spring Creek shooting range.

The Ranger District will continue to revisit the remaining closure area to see if additional sections can be reopened.
