Quebec police officer formally charged with dangerous driving in death of boy
LONGUEUIL, Que. – A Quebec provincial police officer has formally been charged with dangerous driving causing the death of a child near Montreal.
Patrick Ouellet was not in attendance in court on Friday and was represented by his lawyer who accepted evidence during a brief hearing in Longueuil.
The Crown announced one month ago that Ouellet faced the single charge in the death of five-year-old Nicholas Thorne-Belance, a passenger in his father’s car when they were struck by Ouellet’s unmarked police cruiser in February 2014.
The police vehicle was going at 120 km-/h in a 50 km/h zone.
Thorne-Belance died a few days later.
Ouellet has been suspended pending the outcome of the legal proceedings.
Members of the young boy’s family attended Friday’s court hearing.
