‘Tired’ thief finds pedal power not enough to escape Penticton police

PENTICTON – Police had no problem stopping a thief trying to make a getaway after a tire theft early Sunday morning.

The man was spotted pedaling down Penticton Avenue at 5 a.m., April 10, on a bicycle and carrying two vehicle tires.

When police attempted to stop the man, he dropped the tires and pedaled off, only to be apprehended a short distance down the street.

A search revealed stolen tires from Kal Tire and a backpack containing break and enter tools.

The man also had an outstanding warrant out of Kelowna.

He was arrested and held pending an appearance in court.

Penticton RCMP also responded to a break and enter at Windsor Plywood at 174 Industrial Pl. last week. Sometime after 6 p.m. on the night of April 6, a gate to the rear of the property was cut, the building’s back door pried open and glass smashed, Penticton RCMP media spokesperson Cpl. Don Wrigglesworth says. Phone and power lines to the building were cut as well.

Tools, adhesives, and petty case was reported stolen. Police are investigating surveillance camera footage from neighbouring businesses and the RCMP identification section is also investigating the incident.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
