Homegrown defensive back Matt Black retires after 10 years with Argonauts

TORONTO – Longtime Toronto Argonauts defensive back Matt Black has retired.

The 34-year-old Toronto native spent his entire 10-season CFL career with his hometown team, winning Grey Cups in 2012 and 2017 with the Argos.

In the latter win, Black made the game-sealing interception in the end zone against the Calgary Stampeders in Ottawa.

Over 127 games with the Argos, Black had 153 defensive tackles, 83 special-teams tackles, three sacks, three interceptions, two touchdowns and two forced fumbles.

He was honoured in 2016 with the CFL’s Jake Gaudaur Veterans’ Award, given to a Canadian CFL player who best demonstrates the attributes of Canada’s veterans through strength, perseverance, courage, comradeship and contribution to communities.

Black will remain with the Argos, working with the front office in a football operations and player relations role.

TICATS SIGN THREE

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have signed offensive lineman Vinston Painter, and wide receivers Andrew Turzilli and Jaelon Acklin.

Painter, 29, has appeared in 14 career NFL games with the Cleveland Browns, Washington Redskins and Arizona Cardinals.

Turzilli played three games with the Tennessee Titans in 2015.

Acklin was cut by the Baltimore Ravens last year in training camp after finishing his NCAA career at Western Illinois.
