PARAMARIBO, Suriname – The lawyer for a rice farmer whose company was involved in the largest drug seizure ever in the South American nation of Surinam says his client has been fatally shot.
Lawyer Irwin Kanhai told website Starnieuws that 40-year-old Nitender Oemrawsingh was found in neighbouring Guyana with a bullet wound in the head.
Kanhai told local media that Oemrawsingh was not a suspect but had planned to contact police investigating the cocaine seizure.
Acting Police Chief Roberto Prade said Saturday that more than 2,300 kilograms (5,070 pounds) of the drug was discovered at the port in the Surinamese capital, nestled among bags of rice produced by Oemrawsingh’s company.
Surinam police spokesman Humprey Naarden told AP that on Tuesday that four arrests have been made in the cocaine case.
