West Kelowna’s top cop moving up

KELOWNA – The officer who has been in charge of the West Kelowna RCMP detachment since 2008 is moving on after 11 years of service to that community, but he's not going far.

Staff Sgt. Duncan Dixon came to West Kelowna first in 2001 for a year and again in 2005 where he worked as senior patrol NCO and Watch Commander. In May of 2008 he took over the detachment.

His final shift in West Kelowna will be today, April 25. He will be moving offices to Kelowna where he will help Supt. Nick Romanchuk oversee Peachland, West Kelowna and Westbank First Nation as well as Regional District areas including parts of Big White.

"It was a great time here (in West Kelowna)," he says. "There were a lot of changes and lot of growth."

Dixon was born in Halifax, Nova Scotia and worked in Ontario, Edmonton and Calgary before joining the RCMP in January 1992.

He has a degree in history from the University of Calgary and speaks fluent French.

His first post was in the Lower Mainland where he served in both Vancouver and White Rock. In 1998 he was posted to the Town of Nakusp where he worked for three years before being transferred to Kelowna for the first time in 2001. Dixon was only in the Okanagan one year before being transferred again, this time to Gabriola Island.

In 2003 he took command of the Dease Lake/Telegraph Creek detachment before returning to Kelowna in 2005 where he has been ever since.

By his side throughout all of the changes are his wife and two kids.

Taking over his position in West Kelowna is Staff Sgt. Leslie Roseberry from White Rock.
