NEW YORK, N.Y. – The acclaimed Deaf West Theatre production of “Spring Awakening” is coming to Broadway.
The revival is choreographed by Spencer Liff and will feature a cast of 27 that blends hearing and deaf performers. Previews begin Sept. 8 and a closing date was set for Jan. 9. It is performed simultaneously in English and American Sign Language.
The show is a rock musical based on Frank Wedekind’s classic drama about a dozen young people discovering their sexual identities. The music is by Duncan Sheik, and the lyrics are by Steven Sater.
The original Broadway production of “Spring Awakening” won eight Tony Awards, including best musical. Deaf West put on its revival in Los Angeles last year. It is best known for its revival of “Big River,” which played Broadway in 2003.
