Work continues on Penticton downtown revitalization

PENTICTON – The revitalization work on Main Street in Penticton is proceeding well, say city officials.

City engineer Ian Chapman says work on the revitalization project on the 200-block of Main Street is "meeting or exceeding expectations."

There have been a few complaints about traffic diversions at Westminster Avenue since the $4.32 million dollar project got underway, Chapman says.

He says in terms of surprises, the crews have discovered a few buried pipes that had not been recorded on any of the city’s plans.

Water main replacement has been completed along with new water service to properties on the west side of the road, concrete curbing is complete right up to the Westminster Avenue intersection, and all four concrete ramps for the raised intersection are finished, as are tree planting boxes.

This week, road grading has been taking place in preparation for paving, unit paver installation is underway in the Westminster Avenue intersection and concrete placement for storefront use areas is also underway. The concrete will allow businesses to conduct their affairs on the sidewalk without impeding pedestrian traffic using the unit paver sidewalks.

Concrete curbing in the Nanaimo Avenue intersection along with unit paver installation in the same intersection remains to be done. Streetlights, traffic signals, trees and landscape planting will complete the job, scheduled for June 18.

Work on the 100-block of Main Street is expected to begin in September, with the section between the link road in Gyro Park  and Westminster Avenue scheduled for completion by the end of the year.
