Man killed in Surrey shooting was defending home from break-in: police

SURREY, B.C. – Police say a man who was shot to death in Surrey, B.C., was defending his home from an attempted break-in.

Sgt. Stephanie Ashton of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team says 42 year-old Colin Hill was killed during an altercation with an alleged intruder.

Ashton says the suspect escaped in a stolen vehicle and was arrested in Burnaby later Sunday after witnesses reported a man with a gun attempting to break into an apartment.

She says the shooting appears to be random and that Hill and the suspect did not know each other.

A 22-year-old man Surrey resident is facing second-degree murder charges and is expected to appear in court Tuesday.
