Specialized trucks, planes target mosquitoes in South Beach

Miami-Dade County officials say they’re delaying the aerial spraying of an insecticide called naled over South Beach following concerns voiced by residents and local officials.

County Mayor Carlos Gimenez said in a statement Wednesday that the spraying to fight the Zika virus scheduled for Thursday morning was moved to Friday morning. Additional sprayings are scheduled for Sunday and the next two weekends.

Some Miami Beach residents and elected officials oppose using naled because of toxicity concerns. Gimenez says state and federal health officials assure county officials that it’s safe. The spraying was pushed back after residents and city leaders asked during a workshop Wednesday morning for more time to prepare.

Trucks began spraying pesticides that kill mosquito larvae in the 1.5-square-mile infection zone Tuesday.
