Penticton community garden nearly ready to grow
PENTICTON – Work continues on plans for a community garden in Penticton.
Dylan Neilson-Schenk says he, the Food Foresters of Canada, JCI Penticton and a number of volunteers have been working on the project for two years now.
“We’re at the point where we are ready to install raised beds, plant some trees and get members of the community growing their own food,” he says.
The group is planning a work bee on their publicly-owned garden property, located at 2460 Baskin St., on Saturday, May 7, from 10 a.m. to noon.
The students will be planting donated trees in their garden on Wednesday afternoon at 2 p.m., Neilson-Shenk says.
This Saturday, donated trees will be planted in the public garden on Baskin Street, where Neilson-Shenk says his group will use the principles of food forestry to grow fruits and vegetables. Construction of raised beds in the garden will provide room for members to grow their own food in the garden, which Neilson-Shenk says should be operational by summer.
