Ex-Colombian councilman sentenced to 14 years in Florida

TAMPA, Fla. – A former city councilman from Colombia has been sentenced in Florida to 14 years in prison for conspiring to distribute cocaine by speedy boats generally used for delivering contraband.

A federal judge in Tampa sentenced Aureliano Cuero-Cuero on Tuesday, four months after he pleaded guilty.

Federal prosecutors say Cuero-Cuero organized and sent out three speedy boats loaded with 1,300 kilograms of cocaine from Columbia in 2015.

The boats were intercepted in international waters and the boats’ crew members were arrested.

Cuero-Cuero was indicted in 2016. He was arrested last year in Colombia and extradited to the United States.

At the time of his indictment, he was a city councilman in Mosquera, Nariño, Colombia.
