OAS-backed commission to tackle corruption in El Salvador

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador – The Organization of American States has announced the creation of a commission that will investigate corruption in El Salvador.

OAS Secretary-General Luis Almagro said Friday from Washington that he and Salvadoran officials agreed to install the International Commission against Impunity in the Central American nation beginning next week.

The commission is known as Cicies for its initials in Spanish.

Salvadoran Vice-President Félix Ulloa tweeted: “Today more than ever we can say that the Cicies is happening.”

President Nayib Bukele promised to promote the establishment of a graft commission shortly after winning election Feb. 3.

Neighbouring Guatemala and Honduras have already had anti-graft commissions backed by international organizations. However, the U.N.-sponsored Cicig is about to shut down in Guatemala after President Jimmy Morales refused to renew its operating mandate.
