Man charged in burglary of southwest Alaska post office

KIPNUK, Alaska – A man suspected of burglarizing a southwest Alaska post office has been arrested.

Alaska State Troopers say 19-year-old Byron Dock was found inside the post office in Kipnuk (KIP-nuk). He’s charged with burglary, criminal mischief, resisting arrest, possession of burglary tools and violating conditions of release on a previous burglary charge.

Dock’s attorney, public defender Spencer Wilson, did not immediately respond to an email request for comment.

Troopers say Kipnuk tribal police officers early Monday morning saw lights inside the post office and found the front door forced open. They investigated and found Dock hiding inside.

Investigators determined that Dock forced open a safe and three inside doors with a crowbar. Boxes of mail were opened with the contents scattered.

Damage to the building interior is estimated at $5,000.
