Poor weather hampering search for skier missing on southeast B.C. mountain
TRAIL, B.C. – A search is underway in southeastern British Columbia for a missing skier.
RCMP in the Trail area say they received a report Monday at around 5 p.m. of a skier overdue after the man failed to return from a run on the back side of Red Mountain.
By the time the report was received, police say 34-year-old Rossland-area resident Mark Gayowski had already been missing for several hours.
An initial search was conducted Monday night but was limited by darkness, dangerous terrain and heavy snowfall.
A ground search resumed at daylight and includes snowmobiles and ski teams but police say weather conditions hamper rescue efforts.
Red Mountain has reported moderate to heavy snowfall in the area.
This report by The Canadian Press was first published Dec. 31, 2019
