Arraignment for accused South Carolina church shooter delayed at request of govt, defence

COLUMBIA, S.C. – A hearing scheduled for next week in the case of the suspected South Carolina church shooter now facing dozens of new charges has been delayed.

The government and attorneys for 21-year-old Dylann Roof asked a judge Friday to postpone the hearing slated for Monday.

In a joint motion, the attorneys said they already have things scheduled for that day and a delay won’t harm the case on either side.

The hearing is now scheduled for 11 a.m. next Friday before Magistrate Judge Bristow Marchant.

Earlier this week, a federal grand jury indicted Roof on 33 charges, including hate crimes.

He’s also charged with numerous state crimes, and prosecutors haven’t said if they’ll seek the death penalty.

The shootings happened June 17 at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston.
