Stampeders’ Jon Cornish suffers broken thumb against Redblacks, out indefinitely

OTTAWA – The Calgary Stampeders will be without star running back Jon Cornish for the foreseeable future.

Cornish suffered a broken thumb in Friday’s 29-26 overtime loss to the Ottawa Redblacks and is expected to be out indefinitely.

“Oh man it hurts, best running back in the league,” said Stampeders quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell. “It’s always going to hurt your offence, but we have complete faith and trust in anybody that has to step in. It’s always hard losing a very dynamic player, but tonight we weren’t giving him the holes anyways. It was an unfortunate play for that to happen, but he’ll get back, he’ll get healthy.”

Cornish has been the CFL’s Most Outstanding Canadian the past three seasons and entered Friday’s contest as the league’s second leading rusher with 285 yards on the ground. He added 20 yards on seven carries to go along with a touchdown against the Redblacks.

“It’s always tough to lose football players, good football players and Jon’s a good football player,” said Calgary head coach John Hufnagel.
