Colombia military searching for missing Spanish journalist

BOGOTA – Colombia’s military has launched a search for a Spanish journalist amid media reports she went missing in a lawless area dominated by leftist rebels and drug-trafficking groups.

Salud Hernandez-Mora is longtime correspondent in Colombia for Spain’s El Mundo and an influential columnist for the Bogota daily El Tiempo.

El Tiempo said Sunday that she was on assignment in El Tarra in the volatile Catatumbo region of northern Colombia when she went missing.

Witnesses told the newspaper that she was last seen Saturday arguing with an unidentified man before taking a motorcycle to an unknown destination. The town’s mayor said it is possible she was taken hostage.

President Juan Manuel Santos’ office said he is closely monitoring the military’s search.
