Salvation Army says $2 million in toys, donations stolen from Toronto warehouse

TORONTO – The Salvation Army says more than $2 million in toys and donations has been stolen from its north Toronto warehouse over two years.

The organization says the toys were taken from its Railside Road facility, along with food and other donations.

It says the issue came to light after a whistleblower came forward in August, prompting an internal audit that led the charity to fire its executive director.

The Salvation Army has not publicly linked the firing to the alleged thefts.

More details are expected to be released today.

The news comes just days after an executive director at the Salvation Army in Ottawa was fired amid concerns over missing money.

The organization released a statement saying auditors discovered $250,000 has gone missing from its operating budget over several years.

Perry Rowe had been with the charity’s Booth Centre for eight years.

The Salvation Army is preparing to start its annual Christmas Kettle Campaign, where volunteers solicit donations in high-traffic areas like shopping malls and on the street.
