Early berry season hits Kamloops Farmers’ Market

KAMLOOPS – Strawberries are in season much earlier than normal this year, with berry farmers and berry lovers already enjoying the fresh, local fruit.

Emma Molina of Berry Sweet Garden has been in the berry business for nearly 30 years, but she says the early start to this year’s strawberry season is something like she’s never seen and people have been lining up at her booth at the farmers’ market every day since the fresh, juicy berries came in. 

One shopper says she bought a box of strawberries from the store last week, but as she walked past the Berry Sweet Garden booth at the farmers' market today, May 18, she just couldn’t say no.

“I love fresh strawberries, but these are special,” Karen says.

Molina says her berries are picked and sold the same day, and the early start has been good for business.

“People are excited and happy they can buy local and fresh. That’s our goal — from the garden to your table,” Molina says.

Molina expects raspberries to be coming in next week as well.

The Kamloops Farmers’ Market is open on Wednesdays in the 400-block of Victoria Street from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Saturdays on St. Paul Street by Stuart Wood Elementary from 8 a.m. to noon through the end of October.
