Penticton affordable housing project slated to begin construction in 2017

PENTICTON – An affordable housing project in downtown Penticton is expected to begin construction next year.

Construction of the 67-unit, wheelchair-accessible building will begin at 284 Brunswick St. in mid 2017, with a second site to be developed at 260 Brunswick St. at a later date.

The Penticton and District Community Resources Society, along with Catalyst Community Development Society, will be the proponents behind the construction and operation of the development, the Ministry of Natural Gas Development and Responsible for Housing announced in a release today, May 18.

The affordable housing development is a partnership between the provincial government and the city, and is aimed at creating more affordable rental housing in the city.

The city is grateful for the province’s financial contribution to the project, Mayor Andrew Jakubeit says in the release, calling low-cost housing 'a serious issue for many in the community'.

Penticton and District Community Resources Society Executive Director Tanya Behardien says the society is anxious to move the project beyond the development stage and begin construction.

The initial project will be constructed on the parking lot adjacent the Penticton Lawn Bowling Club, with a second phase to be built on the bowling lawns following the expiration of the club’s lease in 2020.
