Jury finds LA liable for scientist’s death, awards $23.7M
LOS ANGELES – A jury has ordered the city of Los Angeles to pay $23.7 million to the family of a scientist killed in a traffic accident three years ago.
Attorneys for Thomas Guilmette’s widow and son say jurors made the award Monday after finding the city 95 per cent liable for his death.
Guilmette, who worked on satellites for Northrop Grumman, died when his motorcycle hit a car that pulled into his path in the San Pedro (PEE’-droh) area.
A lawsuit alleged the city had received complaints for years that the intersection was dangerous but did nothing to make it safer until after Guilmette died.
Rob Wilcox, a spokesman for the city attorney’s office, tells the Los Angeles Times (http://lat.ms/1UtTxuF ) that the jury award is outrageous and will be appealed.
