Hurricane Guillermo swirling in Pacific; forecaster says it’s possibly headed toward Hawaii
MIAMI – Hurricane Guillermo is swirling in the Pacific and could be headed toward Hawaii.
The Category 1 storm has maximum sustained winds early Friday near 90 mph (150 kph) with additional strengthening forecast during the next two days. Forecasters with the National Hurricane Center say Guillermo could become a major hurricane this weekend.
Earlier Friday, Richard Pasch, a senior hurricane specialist at the centre, said Guillermo is headed in Hawaii’s general direction but it’s too early to tell if there will be any danger to land.
The hurricane is centred about 1,570 miles (2,525 kilometres) east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii, and is moving west-northwest at 17 mph (28 kph).
