International court unseals indictment against wife of former Ivory Coast president

THE HAGUE, Netherlands – The International Criminal Court says it has indicted Simone Gbagbo, the wife of former Ivory Coast president Laurent Gbagbo, on charges including murder, rape and persecution.

The court announced Thursday it had unsealed an arrest warrant issued Feb. 29 for the first woman indicted by the world’s first permanent war crimes court.

Laurent Gbagbo husband is already in custody at the court’s detention unit in The Hague facing similar charges stemming from his fight to retain power after losing a 2010 presidential election.
