The Latest: LA freeway reopens after fuel tanker crash

LOS ANGELES – The Latest on the closure of a major Southern California highway after a crash (all times local):

6:30 p.m.

The California Department of Transportation says traffic is moving again on northbound Interstate 5 after a closure following a tanker crash north of downtown Los Angeles.

Caltrans says three northbound lanes were reopened Wednesday evening after being closed for much of the day.

The fuel tanker overturned around 7 a.m. and spilled diesel along the roadway.

The California Highway Patrol says the driver was trying to avoid another vehicle when the crash happened.

It caused extensive traffic backups.

A fuel tanker that overturned on a Southern California freeway during morning rush-hour traffic has forced an hours-long shutdown as crews clean up spilled diesel.

The crash was reported around 7 a.m. Wednesday on northbound Interstate 5 north of downtown Los Angeles.

The California Highway Patrol says the driver was trying to avoid another vehicle when the truck turned over around 7 a.m. He was able to exit the truck with no injuries.

Officials say the shutdown is expected to last five hours.

A CHP spokesman reports extensive traffic backups.
