Vernon Cemetery to receive $70,000 in turf improvements
VERNON – The Vernon Cemetery is getting some TLC from the city.
Vernon Mayor Akbal Mund says the cemetery on Pleasant Valley Road was starting to look a little worse for wear, but $70,000 in upgrades should help.
The grass has gone dry and patchy in some areas and Mund says the money will go towards replacing turf and sod.
“It’s a cemetery. A lot of loved ones are buried there so to me, it should look nice,” Mund says.
The cemetery is operated and maintained by the city through contract crews.
“It’s an old cemetery and probably should have been looked after better, but we’re going to rectify that,” Mund says.
Dry grass might be a symptom of problems with the irrigation system, Mund notes, adding the system will be looked at during future budget talks.
