Heavy rains cause flooding, mudslide in Dominican Republic

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic – Authorities in the Dominican Republic say heavy rain has caused flooding in the city of San Pedro de Macoris and elsewhere in the Caribbean nation’s eastern region.

Emergency management officials say the storm flooded 125 homes and five stores in the city and caused a mudslide that endangered six other residences. They say drainage problems exacerbated the flooding.

Authorities remained on alert Saturday with 12 provinces on official storm watch.
