Support grows among some premiers to ship Alberta oil to Eastern Canada

HALIFAX – There is growing support among some of Canada’s premiers behind the proposal to ship Alberta oil to Eastern Canada.

Manitoba Premier Greg Selinger says the idea presents an opportunity to build national energy security.

Selinger says it would also boost private investment in the East while providing greater market opportunities for energy producers in the West.

Nova Scotia Premier Darrell Dexter says the project could also boost Atlantic Canada’s energy infrastructure.

Their comments come after Alberta’s Alison Redford and Quebec’s Pauline Marois agreed Thursday to set up working groups to examine the possible benefits and environmental effects of the project.

British Columbia Premier Christy Clarke says the development does little to change her government’s opposition to a pipeline running through her province if it does not secure greater economic benefits.

The premiers are meeting in Halifax today to discuss the economy.
