Cultures of ‘Denial’ workshop at UBC tackles climate skepticism
KELOWNA – A UBC professor wants to know more about the people who are skeptical, or even deny, the facts of climate change.
Greg Garrard, Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies Sustainability Professor at UBC Okanagan’s campus, is hosting a three-day workshop: Cultures of Denial—International Perspectives on Climate Skepticism in June.
Garrard’s workshop involves a team of international Humanities researchers who will examine climate skeptics: who are they? What view of science and nature do they hold? Are they all conservatives? Is there any meaningful difference between ‘skepticism’ and ‘denialism’? How does climate skepticism vary between nations?
As part of the workshop on campus, UBC will host a panel discussion about this topic, open to the public, at the Kelowna Art Gallery, Tuesday June 7, at 6 p.m. The workshop is also open to the public, but has a registration fee. To find out more details, and to register for the workshop, contact greg.garrard@ubc.ca by Monday, June 30.
