Family of boxer ‘Macho’ Camacho keeps grim vigil in Puerto Rico; life support decision pending

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Family and friends of Hector (Macho) Camacho are keeping a sombre vigil at the hospital in Puerto Rico where he remains on life support.

Doctors in San Juan say Camacho is clinically brain dead from a shooting earlier this week in his hometown of Bayamon. But family members and friends tell The Associated Press they are still wrestling with whether to remove him from life support.

Aida Camacho is one of the boxer’s aunts and she says a decision could come later Friday.

The former champion was shot Tuesday night as he sat in a car with a friend. The friend was killed. Police have made no arrests.

Meanwhile, condolences are coming in for the boxer’s family and preparations have begun for memorials and a funeral Mass.
