Two young women rescued in Kamloops after vehicle ends up in river

KAMLOOPS – It’s a mystery to firefighters how a car ended up in the river in Kamloops last night.

Fire, ambulance and RCMP responded to reports of a vehicle in the Thompson River in the Lafarge area around 7:45 p.m., May 28.

Kamloops Fire Rescue assistant fire chief Dave McMahon says two girls, who had been in the vehicle, swam to a ledge in the river and couldn’t walk out.

He says firefighters used the rescue boat to get the pair to shore.

The girls were suffering from the early stages of hypothermia so rescuers warmed them up with blankets and got them to waiting B.C. Ambulance paramedics, McMahon says.

“I have no idea how or why the vehicle got in the river,” he says.

Calls to Kamloops RCMP have not been returned.
