Some of the most active companies traded Thursday on the Toronto Stock Exchange:

Bombardier Inc. (TSX:BBD.B). Aerospace, rail equipment. Down five cents, or 3.14 per cent, to $1.54 on 10.9 million shares. Bombardier has won a contract from Israel Railways for 62 electric locomotives valued at US$260 million, the railway said Thursday. The Montreal-based company’s transportation division was selected over several international rivals including Alstom and Chinese bidders.

First Quantum Minerals Ltd. (TSX:FM). Miner. Up 79 cents, or 8.32 per cent, to $10.28 on 5.5 million shares.

Eldorado Gold Corp. (TSX:ELD). Miner. Up one cent, or 0.24 per cent, to $4.23 on 5.1 million shares.

Barrick Gold Corp. (TSX:ABX). Miner. Up 32 cents, or 3.69 per cent, to $8.99 on 4.9 million shares. Barrick Gold Corp. is selling off some of its mines and cutting its dividend as it works to transform itself into a leaner, more profitable company amid the plummeting price of bullion. “This is not only about reducing debt,” co-president Kelvin Dushnisky told investors during a conference call Thursday. “We want a portfolio focused on high quality gold assets and growth projects in our core regions of the Americas.”

Yamana Gold Inc. (TSX:YRI). Miner. Up seven cents, or 3.06 per cent, to $2.36 on 4.8 million shares.

Encana Corp. (TSX:ECA). Oil and gas. Up 41 cents, or 4.58 per cent, to $9.37 on 4.4 million shares.

SNC-Lavalin Group Inc. (TSX:SNC). Engineering. Down $3.68, or 8.42 per cent, to $40.05 on 967,001 shares. SNC-Lavalin Group Inc. says it had a reduced $26.5 million profit for its shareholders in the second quarter, as its investments provided a smaller contribution and it lost money in part of its main engineering and construction business. Overall profits decreased as contributions from concessions fell to $45 million from $78.9 million — primarily as a result of the sale of SNC’s investment in the AltaLink electricity business in Alberta.
