Penticton residents get advice protecting property from wildfires

PENTICTON – Residents of Sendero Canyon braved the rain to take part in a session on wildfire preparedness yesterday.

The Penticton Fire Department and Wildfire Management hosted an informative session on preparing for a wildfire on Sunday, May 29, at the growing subdivision just off Carmi Road.

Penticton Fire Chief Larry Watkinson was pleased with the number of residents who showed up in spite of a sudden downpour.

“Considering the weather, for 30 people to show up and go for a walkabout in the middle of a downpour, I was quite impressed with the residents and their commitment to the firesmart program,” Watkinson says.

He said residents learned not only how to protect their homes, but also learned how to be prepare themselves and be proactive in the preparation of their homes in the event of a wildfire evacuation.

The city continues its work to secure grant funding to perform mitigative work on high priority areas along the city’s boundaries. Watkinson says the two top priority sites for the mitigation work include the top of Riddle Road in the Three Blind Mice are and near the Campbell Mountain landfill.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
