Surprise audit cuts into Kamloops school district budget

KAMLOOPS – An enrolment audit of the Kamloops school district cost the district more than $135,000, but the superintendent says their are no hard feelings.

A provincial audit of the number of students attending School District 73 schools resulted in more than $135,000 lost from this year's budget, Supt. Karl deBruijn says, explaining enrolment auditors found some minor issues, like differences between how many classes students are enrolled in and how many the district is allowed to claim in the 2015/16 school year.

“It’s a small amount of money in the overall budget, we just have to make the adjustments,” he says. “However, I would still like to have that in the bank.”

The auditors were complimentary though, deBruijn notes. None of the mistakes were due to malicious intent, just human error and auditors provided suggestions on improvements.

“We got some really good tips,” he says. “We’ll make sure next time they don’t get anything.”
