Hip fracture forces ex-Boston Symphony conductor Seiji Ozawa to cancel 3 concerts in Japan

TOKYO – Former Boston Symphony conductor Seiji Ozawa has cancelled three performances in Japan after fracturing his hip.

The Seiji Ozawa Matsumoto Festival says the 79-year-old conductor tumbled on Aug. 1 and hurt his hip. He is undergoing three weeks of physical therapy at a hospital.

Ozawa will be replaced by American Gil Rose for performances of the Hector Berlioz opera “Beatrice et Benedict” on Aug. 24, 27 and 29.

Festival organizers said Saturday that Ozawa still plans to conduct his 80th birthday concert on Sept. 1, and another on Sept. 6. The festival runs from Aug. 9 to Sept. 15 in the city of Matsumoto.

Ozawa led the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1973 to 2002, and the Vienna State Opera from 2002 to 2010.
