RIO DE JANEIRO – Brazilian federal police have arrested a former Rio de Janeiro state governor for his alleged involvement in a vote-buying scheme.
Inspector Alessandro Rodrigues says Anthony Garotinho was arrested Wednesday morning at his home in Rio de Janeiro’s Flamengo beach area.
Rodrigues says Garotinho is suspected of involvement in a scheme to fraudulently enrol people in a poverty reduction program in exchange for votes in municipal elections in the city of Campos dos Goytacazes.
Garotinho served as Rio de Janeiro state governor between 1999 and 2002. He is an adviser to the mayor of Campos dos Goytacazes.
