MEXICO CITY – Mexican authorities say that eight dead bodies were abandoned in a field in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz.
A statement from state prosecutors says security forces were in pursuit of several vehicles in the city of Alto Lucero on Friday. It says the bodies were “abandoned” along with 12 vehicles and the scene was placed under military guard.
The unidentified dead include seven men and one woman. There were no arrests.
The prosecutor’s office statement did not say Saturday whether there was a shootout or give further details.
Veracruz state has seen homicides rise this year amid turf wars between rival drug cartels.
