Encarnacion back in Blue Jays’ lineup vs. Yankees after four-game absence

TORONTO – Edwin Encarnacion is back in the Toronto Blue Jays’ lineup after missing four games with a sore left middle finger.

Encarnacion, who hadn’t played since Saturday at Yankee Stadium, was back as the designated hitter, batting fourth with the New York Yankees in town for the series opener at Rogers Centre.

“He’s feeling better,” manager John Gibbons said. “He feels good enough to play. Hopefully it doesn’t flare up again. We’ll see. But he’s ready to go.”

Gibbons said Encarnacion’s finger swelled up and that the 32-year-old struggled to grip the bat and had problems when he made contact.

“One of those hockey injuries,” Gibbons said with a laugh.

Encarnacion is hitting .251 with 21 home runs and 64 runs batted in this season.
