Smoke expected over South Okanagan today
OLIVER – Residents of the South Okanagan may notice smoky skies in the area starting around noon today.
B.C. Wildfire says crews will be conducting a burn trial east of Oliver today, June 7, which may result in smoke visible in parts of the South Okanagan.
The wildfire service conducts burn trials periodically throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre in order to assess fuel conditions on the forest floor.
The burn is intended to be low-intensity, and will be monitored at all times by wildfire personnel to ensure it stays within parameters and is fully extinguished by the end of the day.
The burn is not expected to exceed an area beyond 50 by 50 metres.
Airtankers based in Penticton are also expected to use the trial burn to practice retardant dropping in the area.
