Queen Mary 2 searches for missing crewmember off the coast of Newfoundland
LONDON – The Queen Mary 2 is searching for a crew member who went overboard Saturday morning of the coast off Newfoundland.
The cruise line, Cunard, said that the ship has turned around to retrace its voyage to search for the missing person, but is being hampered by foggy weather.
“We have clearly established that the crew member went overboard earlier this morning,” Cunard said in a statement.
Cunard did not provide details of the incident but says it is working closely with local authorities.
The Queen Mary 2, Cunard’s flagship, was travelling from Southampton to New York and is due to stop in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on Monday.
Christened in 2004, the ship is 1,132 feet (345 metres) long, has 19 decks and carries 2,620 passengers.
Described by Cunard as “wonderfully grand,” the ship boasts the largest dance floor at sea, a luxurious 3D cinema, a planetarium and a classical music venue. Fares on the current cruise range from 1,599 pounds ($2,500) to 4,849 pounds ($7,586).
