Penticton council supports new daycare location

PENTICTON – A proposal to rezone a Government Street residence to allow for a daycare faced little opposition earlier this week.

Proponent Karen Noe-Vack of Speckled Frogs Daycare, an experienced daycare operator, says the operation will see a maximum of 10 children. She notes the only concerns she’s heard center around parking but adds parents will only be in the area for a few minutes to drop off and pick up their children.

During a public hearing Monday, June 6, Balfour Street resident Bill Slessor warned council of traffic conditions at the intersection of Government Street and Duncan Avenue, calling the area 'a speedway'. He expressed concerns about an increase in traffic and dangers associated with that.

Council revisited the matter during the regular meeting of council Monday, voting unanimously to support the rezoning. Several councillors noted Penticton’s need for more daycare spaces in order to make the city more attractive to families.

The zoning amendment will result in rezoning 1399 Government St. to a commercial transition classification from a large lot residential classification, allowing a daycare to operate on the property.
