Vernon launches counter attack against loaded drivers

For those who have enjoyed a few too many holiday spirits, it's a wiser choice to stay in and sleep it off.

As Christmas parties started up over the weekend, the Vernon RCMP initiated Counter Attack—a holiday anti drinking driving campaign in its 35th year.

"Drivers need to think before they get behind the wheel," said Gord Molendyk, spokesperson for the RCMP.

In the past week, the RCMP revoked licenses from ten drivers. A few were three day suspensions, but some were 90 day suspensions offering a bigger lesson in consequences to the offenders. Molendyk expects the trend to continue over the holidays with about 10 suspensions per week.

Road checks will be held across the North Okanagan.

Molendyk said this is the worst time of year for pedestrian motor vehicle accidents, adding that the earlier nightfall is partly to blame.

"We get very dark by 4 o'clock now."

Molendyk said drivers must watch closely for pedestrians, and vice versa, at crosswalks and on roadways in general.

"Pedestrians need to pay attention too," he said.

"You need to know you've been seen before you jump off (the curb)."

Molendyk noted that many pedestrians wear dark clothes that blend them into the darkness.

The importance of being visible then, is a good excuse to dress festively for the holidays with a bright red Santa hat and a touch of tinsel. Just be sure to leave the rum and egg nog at home.
