Strawberry season returns to the Okanagan

Strawberry season is upon us once again.

Navi Aujla of Osoyoos Fruit Basket says this year’s crop is looking good with recent weather conditions cooperating with growers.

“The crop is on time this year. Every year we have strawberries around this time,” she says.

Osoyoos Fruit Basket doesn’t have a U-pick field open yet, Aukla says, but expect to open one in the next couple of weeks.

She says plants haven’t reached full production, but berries are available at the fruit stand, located at 9910 Crowsnest Highway, in Osoyoos, every day.

They'll have to wait a little longer, farther up the valley.

Rabi Panu of Function Junction Fruit Stand at 811 Highway 33 in Kelowna says his strawberries should be ready in about a week and a half.

“It’s been a good growing season so far,” he says.

Good ’N’ Plenty Produce, located at 1475 Pleasant Valley Road in Armstrong should have their strawberries ready for sale in the first or second week of June.

“They are in bloom and looking really good this year,” Cheryl Rohrer says of the crop.

In Kamloops, Gourmet Greens Produce Market’s Ken Evans says he expects local strawberries to be available in the next couple of weeks. Evans says one of Gourmet Greens local strawberry suppliers is  Horstings Farm Market, located at 2450 Cariboo Highway 97.

I have been looking for news in the South Okanagan - SImilkameen for 20 years, having turned a part time lifelong interest into a full time profession. After five years publishing a local newsletter, several years working as a correspondent / stringer for several local newspapers and seven years as editor of a Similkameen weekly newspaper, I joined iNFOnews.ca in 2014. My goal in the news industry has always been to deliver accurate and interesting articles about local people and places. My interest in the profession is life long - from my earliest memories of grade school, I have enjoyed writing.
As an airborne geophysical surveyor I travelled extensively around the globe, conducting helicopter borne mineral surveys.
I also spent several years at an Okanagan Falls based lumber mill, producing glued-wood laminated products.
As a member of the Kaleden community, I have been involved in the Kaleden Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, and also serve as a trustee on the Kaleden Irrigation District board.
I am currently married to my wife Judy, of 26 years. We are empty-nesters who enjoy living in Kaleden with our Welsh Terrier, Angus, and cat, Tibbs.
Our two daughters, Meagan and Hayley, reside in Richmond and Victoria, respectively.
