State unveils map of significant Henry David Thoreau spots

BOSTON – The state is making it easier for fans of Henry David Thoreau and other literary giants from Massachusetts to find their way to the significant places in the authors’ lives.

The Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism has created a map and itinerary that charts the places where Thoreau was born, raised and inspired, and includes the homes and gathering spots of other famous Concord writers including the Alcotts, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Nathaniel Hawthorne.

Each of the 14 stops on “Thoreau’s Concord: A Transcendental Journey” has been classified as a space for outdoor adventure, a historic home or farm-to-table dining experience.

This year marks the 200th anniversary of Thoreau’s birth in Concord on July 12, 1817.

The naturalist and philosopher is famous for writing “Walden” and “Civil Disobedience.”
