Qualifier Daniel Evans beats Daniel to advance to third round of VanOpen

WEST VANCOUVER, B.C. – Qualifier Daniel Evans, of Britain, came back to beat seventh seed Taro Daniel in second round men’s singles action on Wednesday at the Odlum Brown VanOpen.

Evans dropped the first set 4-6 before a 6-3 win in the second. The Brit squeaked out a 7-6(6) victory in the third set.

The tournament is an event on the ATP Challenger Tour.

Elsewhere, Russian Karen Khachanov beat second-seed John Millman of Australia 7-6(6), 4-6, 7-6(4) in two hours 44 minutes.

Fourth-seed Ruben Bemelmans of Belgium was upset by Britain’s Brydan Klein 3-6, 6-3, 6-7(4) and Australia’s John-Patrick Smith downed Jurgen Melzer of Austria 6-3, 6-2.

In doubles action, Ricardas Berankis and Dudi Sela topped New Zealand’s Marcus Daniell and Artem Sitak 3-6, 6-3, 11-9.
