NY stages topless parade with 60 cities worldwide, demanding bare-chest gender equality
NEW YORK, N.Y. – Bare-chested women and men are taking to the streets of midtown Manhattan as critics have complained about topless tip-seeking in Times Square.
Appearing topless is legal in New York but Mayor Bill de Blasio and others believe the body-painted women who take photos with tourists are a nuisance.
De Blasio has even suggested doing away with the pedestrian plaza at the “Crossroads of the World.” And Gov. Andrew Cuomo said he fears the practice harkens to the “bad old Times Square” of yesteryear.
Sunday’s parade is among dozens of events happening worldwide for GoTopless Day.
In New York, GoTopless spokeswoman Rachel Jessee says the goal is for gender equality when it comes to baring one’s chest.
