Baruchel and MacLean face off in CBC’s annual battle of the books
TORONTO – CBC’s annual battle of the books will pit actor Jay Baruchel against hockey commentator Ron MacLean.
The duo is among five celebrity panellists who will face off in the next instalment of “Canada Reads” — a series of debates meant to determine “Canada’s must-read title for 2013.”
Jian Ghomeshi announced the panelists and their chosen books on his radio show, “Q.”
Baruchel will defend Hugh MacLennan’s classic 1945 look at the English and French divide in “Two Solitudes” (McClelland & Stewart) while MacLean will champion David Bergen’s 2012 novel “The Age of Hope” (HarperCollins Canada).
Biographer and historian Charlotte Gray will push for 1993’s “Away” by Jane Urquhart (McClelland & Stewart); Olympic gold medal-winning wrestler Carol Huynh will support 2012’s “Indian Horse” by Richard Wagamese (Douglas & McIntyre) and comedian Trent McClellan will argue for 2009’s “February” by Lisa Moore (House of Anansi).
Four live hour-long debates will play out in front of an audience in Toronto from Feb. 11 to Feb. 14, 2013.
