Hang glider pilot lives to fly another day
VERNON – An Edmonton man’s plan to fly his hang glider from Lumby to Nakusp came to crashing halt in a remote cut block, May 7.
Vernon RCMP are just now releasing the details about the crash and rescue.
Police received a call from the International Emergency Response Coordination Centre about an emergency beacon activation near the South Fork Service Road in the Cherryville area.
A check of the map showed there were no roads close by so the RCMP launched a helicopter with a dog team on board.
RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk says they spotted the 32-year-old Edmonton man and his crashed glider in a very remote area. The helicopter pilot found a safe landing site nearby.
A downdraft smashed the man's aircraft to the ground and his ankle was broken during the crash.
Molendyk says an RCMP vehicle attempting to get to the crash site got stuck in a muddy washout on the forest service road.
The pilot and dog handler had to carry the injured man to the helicopter. He was flown to Lumby and transferred to an ambulance for a ride to the hospital.
